16:1 And the LORD3068 said0559 unto Samuel8050, How long wilt thou mourn0056 for Saul7586, seeing I have rejected3988 him from reigning4427 over Israel3478? fill4390 thine horn7161 with oil8081, and go3212, I will send7971 thee to Jesse3448 the Bethlehemite1022: for I have provided7200 me a king4428 among his sons1121.
16:2 And Samuel8050 said0559, How can I go3212? if Saul7586 hear8085 {it}, he will kill2026 me. And the LORD3068 said0559, Take3947 an heifer1241-5697 with thee3027, and say0559, I am come0935 to sacrifice2076 to the LORD3068.
16:3 And call7121 Jesse3448 to the sacrifice2077, and I will shew3045 thee what thou shalt do6213: and thou shalt anoint4886 unto me {him} whom I name0559 unto thee.
16:4 And Samuel8050 did6213 that which the LORD3068 spake1696, and came0935 to Bethlehem1035. And the elders2205 of the town5892 trembled2729 at his coming7125, and said0559, Comest0935 thou peaceably7965?
16:5 And he said0559, Peaceably7965: I am come0935 to sacrifice2076 unto the LORD3068: sanctify6942 yourselves, and come0935 with me to the sacrifice2077. And he sanctified6942 Jesse3448 and his sons1121, and called7121 them to the sacrifice2077.
16:6 And it came to pass, when they were come0935, that he looked7200 on Eliab0446, and said0559, Surely the LORD'S3068 anointed4899 {is} before him.
16:7 But the LORD3068 said0559 unto Samuel8050, Look5027 not on his countenance4758, or on the height1364 of his stature6967; because I have refused3988 him: for {the LORD seeth} not as man0120 seeth7200; for man0120 looketh7200 on the outward appearance5869, but the LORD3068 looketh7200 on the heart3824.
16:8 Then Jesse3448 called7121 Abinadab0041, and made him pass5674 before6440 Samuel8050. And he said0559, Neither hath the LORD3068 chosen0977 this.
16:9 Then Jesse3448 made Shammah8048 to pass by5674. And he said0559, Neither hath the LORD3068 chosen0977 this.
16:10 Again, Jesse3448 made seven7651 of his sons1121 to pass5674 before6440 Samuel8050. And Samuel8050 said0559 unto Jesse3448, The LORD3068 hath not chosen0977 these.
16:11 And Samuel8050 said0559 unto Jesse3448, Are here all8552 {thy} children5288? And he said0559, There remaineth7604 yet the youngest6996, and, behold, he keepeth7462 the sheep6629. And Samuel8050 said0559 unto Jesse3448, Send7971 and fetch3947 him: for we will not sit down5437 till he come0935 hither6311.
16:12 And he sent7971, and brought him in0935. Now he {was} ruddy0132, {and} withal5973 of a beautiful3303 countenance5869, and goodly2896 to look to7210. And the LORD3068 said0559, Arise6965, anoint4886 him: for this {is} he.
16:13 Then Samuel8050 took3947 the horn7161 of oil8081, and anointed4886 him in the midst7130 of his brethren0251: and the Spirit7307 of the LORD3068 came6743 upon David1732 from that day3117 forward4605. So Samuel8050 rose up6965, and went3212 to Ramah7414.
16:14 But the Spirit7307 of the LORD3068 departed5493 from Saul7586, and an evil7451 spirit7307 from the LORD3068 troubled1204 him.
16:15 And Saul's7586 servants5650 said0559 unto him, Behold now, an evil7451 spirit7307 from God0430 troubleth1204 thee.
16:16 Let our lord0113 now command0559 thy servants5650, {which are} before6440 thee, to seek out1245 a man0376, {who is} a cunning3045 player5059 on an harp3658: and it shall come to pass, when the evil7451 spirit7307 from God0430 is upon thee, that he shall play5059 with his hand3027, and thou shalt be well2895.
16:17 And Saul7586 said0559 unto his servants5650, Provide7200 me now a man0376 that can play5059 well3190, and bring0935 {him} to me.
16:18 Then answered6030 one0259 of the servants5288, and said0559, Behold, I have seen7200 a son1121 of Jesse3448 the Bethlehemite1022, {that is} cunning3045 in playing5059, and a mighty1368 valiant man2428, and a man0376 of war4421, and prudent0995 in matters1697, and a comely8389 person0376, and the LORD3068 {is} with him.
16:19 Wherefore Saul7586 sent7971 messengers4397 unto Jesse3448, and said0559, Send7971 me David1732 thy son1121, which {is} with the sheep6629.
16:20 And Jesse3448 took3947 an ass2543 {laden} with bread3899, and a bottle4997 of wine3196, and a0259 kid1423-5795, and sent7971 {them} by3027 David1732 his son1121 unto Saul7586.
16:21 And David1732 came0935 to Saul7586, and stood5975 before6440 him: and he loved0157 him greatly3966; and he became his armourbearer5375-3627.
16:22 And Saul7586 sent7971 to Jesse3448, saying0559, Let David1732, I pray thee, stand5975 before6440 me; for he hath found4672 favour2580 in my sight5869.
16:23 And it came to pass, when the {evil} spirit7307 from God0430 was upon Saul7586, that David1732 took3947 an harp3658, and played5059 with his hand3027: so Saul7586 was refreshed7304, and was well2895, and the evil7451 spirit7307 departed5493 from him.
