一、一般用法：指因缺乏而忍受饥饿。复数－指一再发生的状况（参 但9:3 ）。ἐν νηστείαις不食， 林后6:5 。ἐν νηστείαις πολλάκις多次不得食， 林后11:27 。

二、特指宗教礼仪中的禁食：
A. 指公众禁食：用于赎罪日(יוֹם כִּפּוּר)， 徒27:9 。

B. 指个人禁食：指摩西在山上（带ταπείνωσις卑微，参 诗35:13 ）。（带προσευχή祷告；参 但9:3 ） 太17:21 可9:29 异版; 林前7:5 公认经文（带δεήσεις祈求） 路2:37 。προσεύχεσθαι μετὰ νηστειῶν禁食祷告， 徒14:23 。νηστείαν νηστεύειν禁食（＝צוּם צוֹם 撒下12:16 王上20:9 ）。
